Best Buy – Extend Warranty
The purpose of this class action is to compensate Quebec residents who purchased an extended warranty from Best Buy or Future Shop stores, as well as all persons who purchased an extended warranty from Best Buy or Future Shop stores in Quebec on or after September 19, 2004.

On November 23, 2020, Union des consommateurs filed an originating application in Superior Court.
Currently, the case is progressing but no trial date has been set.
On May 2nd, 2019, the Supreme Court of Canada dismissed Best Buy’s application for leave to appeal. This decision confirms the judgment of the Quebec Court of Appeal authorizing a class action against Best Buy in this matter.
The authorization of the class action means that the Union des consommateurs and its lawyers may represent all members of the group.
It follows that the Superior Court of Quebec will hear the case opposing Union des consommateurs to Best Buy with regards to the extended warranties it sells to consumers.
Conditions to be part of this class action
You are part of the class action if you meet all of the following criteria:
– You purchased, on or after September 19, 2004, an extended warranty;
– The purchase was made at Best Buy or Future Shop by phone, in-store or on the websites futureshop.ca or bestbuy.ca;
– You lived in Quebec at the time of purchase OR you made this purchase in Quebec.
YOU ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS CLASS ACTION IF you are a merchant who purchased an extended warranty for the purposes of your business.
Summary of the class action
On September 18, 2007, the Union des consommateurs filed an application for authorization to institute a class action. On October 14, 2015, the Union des consommateurs amended this application.
On July 14, 2016, Justice Granosik of the Superior Court authorized the class action.
On August 15, 2016, the decision authorizing the class action was appealed by Union des consommateurs and Best Buy. The hearing at the Court of Appeal was held on October 4, 2017.
On March 22, 2018, the Court of Appeal rendered its judgment upholding the authorization of the class action and adding 2 main questions of fact and law to be decided at trial.
On May 22, 2018, Best Buy filed an application for leave to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada.
On May 2nd the Supreme Court of Canada dismissed Best Buy’s application for leave to appeal.
