Freedom of demonstration triumphs: acquittal of Sandra Cordero

When she was arrested on May 1st, 2015, Sandra Cordero was demonstrating peacefully in the march commemorating the International Workers’ Day. Ms. Cordero was charged with assaulting the peace officer who arrested her. She was also accused of obstructing the peace officer in the performance of his duties. Her trial was held on December 16, 2015 and March 8, 2017. On April 26, 2017, Judge Manon Bourbonnais of the Municipal Court of Montreal acquitted Ms. Cordero. This is an important victory for the freedom of peaceful assembly and the freedom of speech. TJL represented Ms. Cordero pro bono.
