    History

TJL represents its clients with courage, integrity, creativity, tenacity and compassion. Its track record has been second to none. Since it was founded, the firm has won more class actions on the merits for plaintiffs than any other firm in Canada. It has also won several landmark cases, including several important cases decided by the Supreme Court of Canada.

Philippe Trudel and Bruce Johnston founded Trudel & Johnston in 1998. Together, they dreamed of confronting injustice whatever its source, of taking cases that would make a difference; cases no else would, and win them.

In 1999, during the trial of the Chaoulli case, they met André Lespérance, a senior counsel at Justice Canada and a fearful adversary.  André jokingly told them that when he could, he would join them and work pro bono on the tobacco case.

In 2008, André Lespérance left Justice Canada to join Lauzon Bélanger, a firm renowned for its excellence in class actions and environmental law.  His arrival reinforced the close collaboration which already existed between the two firms.  Gradually, all important files were handled in concert.

In 2015, Lauzon Bélanger Lespérance and Trudel & Johnston joined forces to become Trudel Johnston & Lespérance.  The firm can count on an idealistic, talented and dynamic team, but also on the expertise and experience of Yves Lauzon Ad. E., a pioneer in the field of class actions for over 35 years.

TJL also maintains alliances with prestigious firms in Canada and abroad in order to ensure the successful conduct of the class actions and other cases it handles which involve multiple jurisdictions.
