In Quebec, thousands of people living with an intellectual disability work in workshops, work platforms, or internships. They do not receive fair wages, nor the benefits and protections normally provided to employees.
A class action has been filed to recognize that these situations are unjust and discriminatory. In addition to denouncing these practices, this action seeks compensation for individuals whose fundamental rights have been violated. It also aims, for the future, to improve these programs so they are more inclusive and respectful of people’s rights.
The goal is not to eliminate these programs. On the contrary, the aim is to improve them so they are fairer, more inclusive, and provide real opportunities for social participation and integration into the workforce.
